To Scale

Has anyone ever had trouble reading their neighbourhood cheese label?

The nutritional label states 3cms squared, or 30 grams = 120 cals.

How devious is it of the cheese manufacturers to print the nutrition facts in uncertain terms? As a cheese enthusiast, I can say very devious! I can also almost guarantee the average person won’t stand in the kitchen with a measuring tape to carefully portion out their cheese in squared cms.

Enter my favourite new loop-hole: The Starfrit Digital Kitchen Scale!

ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0D96JLBKH

This thing is wild! I can measure anything solid, or anything liquid by using the units button to cycle between fluid ounces, milliliters, pounds, ounces, and grams. It also has a tare function. If you don’t know tare yet, it means we can put any bowl, pitcher or measuring cup on the scale, zero the weight, then determine the true weight of the items on hand.

This is my first kitchen scale so the tare function was a huge sell point for me!

I was considering getting a scale, for a period of about two weeks. I put it in my cart, took it out, placed it back in the cart, ordered it, cancelled the order.

I just wasn’t convinced I needed it and couldn’t yet justify the purchase. Now that I’m all in, I can officially tell you I’ve never needed this scale more than I do now.

Starfrit promotes this product on Amazon at an affordable price of $14.99 CAD. I can confidently say Starfrit’s value proposition is at full scale-pun intended! with this item. This scale is functional, yet still small impact for space saving. This is going to be an asset for you if you’re getting serious about portion control, or want to be more technical as a baker in your home kitchen. The only cautionary tale I see for this item is the maximum leverage is 11LBS, so if you need something heavier duty this one is probably not for you.

Should you get one? It’s completely up to you.

However I can say I have tested the tare function with chicken, hamburgers, protein balls and cheese, and it works! Before using this scale I had no idea how many ounces of meat I was eating, and how many calories it cost me.

I would highly recommend this scale. In fact I would go out of my way to recommend it.
